14th Annual Award Of Achievement Collegiate Grant Competition Gets Under Way

February 1, 2002

PITTSBURGH – Dominion Peoples announced today that applications are now being accepted for the Annual Award of Achievement Collegiate Grant Competition. The awards recognize significant achievements made by African American high school seniors in the areas of academics and leadership.

Over $45,000 in scholarship funding has been provided to students throughout southwestern Pennsylvania since 1987. According to Ed Roach, Jr., chief executive officer of Dominion Delivery: “We value the accomplishments being made by these outstanding students. Dominion has an on-going commitment towards education and diversity. We hope that these young people can see that success is attainable through hard work and dedication.”

The awards consist of a $3,000 first place, a $2,000 second place and a $1,000 third place, all of which will be determined by an independent review committee. The committee will look at various factors such as academic profiles, letters of recommendation, community involvement as well as personal interviews of each applicant.

Over 2000 applications were mailed to high schools and social service agencies throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Students who are interested in applying can obtain an application from their guidance counselor or by contacting Dominion Peoples’ Community Affairs department at (412) 690-1430. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2002.

Dominion Peoples invites African-American high school seniors in its service area to submit applications. Student winners will be recognized at a special luncheon held in their honor in May.
