RICHMOND, Va. – Dominion (NYSE: D) electricity customers set another record one-hour peak demand Wednesday. The peak of 18,897 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. was the third in consecutive days and the fourth in 9 days.

Record peaks from the company’s 2.2 million customers in Virginia and northeast North Carolina this summer and the last few days include:

  • June 14 — 17,291 megawatts
  • July 19 — 17,305 megawatts
  • July 25 — 17,688 megawatts
  • July 26 — 18,360 megawatts
  • July 27 — 18,897 megawatts

"Our generating, transmission and distribution facilities have performed very well during this record high demand and our membership in the PJM Interconnection has given us access to additional generating resources," said Jay L. Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Dominion Virginia Power and Dominion North Carolina Power.

While the record levels of demand began easing as the blistering temperatures cooled slightly, hundreds of company linemen worked overnight and today restoring power to customers who lost service due to high winds and lightning from thunderstorms. Crews restored more than 90,000 customers.

"We want to thank affected customers for their patience and all of our customers for using energy wisely during this period of record demand," said Johnson. "We also want to thank our employees, who’ve put in some very long, hot hours this week."
