RICHMOND, Va. - Consumers are seeing new light, thanks to Dominion Virginia Power’s instant discount program for energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Sales in the first month have totaled 197,609 CFL bulbs, topping the goal of 150,000 bulbs set for 2007.

“We are extremely pleased with and proud of the program’s initial success. It means our customers are interested in making energy-conscious decisions that empower them,” said Dave Green, vice president-Customer Service. “By offering a financial incentive, our customers are finding it easier to begin energy-efficient practices.”

Dominion is providing a $1.50 discount on single and $3 on multi-packs of Energy Star-qualified CFL bulbs purchased at The Home Depot stores in Eastern, Central and Northern Virginia. While this year’s sales target has been reached, Dominion will continue to offer discounts for the remainder of the 2007 as part of its multi-year program

Dominion set a target of distributing a total of 1.4 million discounted CFLs through 2009 when it launched the program Oct. 1. Because of the initial popularity of the program, the company will expand it to larger goal numbers and will offer the discount at other retailers beginning next year. Details of the expansion will be announced later.

CFL bulbs consume about 75 percent less energy to produce the same amount of light as traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer. Replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb with an equivalent CFL can save a typical Dominion Virginia Power residential customer $54 during the bulb’s lifetime, according estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Dominion customers would save $75 million and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 425,000 tons – the equivalent of removing 70,000 cars from the road for one year – if all 1.4 million CFL bulbs were to replace 60-watt incandescent bulbs, according to EPA calculations.

Dominion, Honeywell and The Home Depot stores in Dominion’s Virginia service area are cooperating to deliver the CFL program initiative.
