Central Lincoln People's Utility District Expands DVI EDGE® Volt-Var Optimization Systemwide

- Oregon electric utility to roll out DVI EDGE® solution leveraging existing advanced metering infrastructure to monitor and optimize distribution circuit voltage
- Energy savings during initial Conservation Voltage Reduction pilot was higher than expected
- AMI-based Conservation Voltage Reduction touted as a "game changer" by Central Lincoln

RICHMOND, Va., March 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Following a successful pilot project, Central Lincoln People's Utility District of Oregon has selected DVI, a grid-optimization subsidiary of energy leader, Dominion (NYSE: D), for a full-system deployment of DVI's EDGE® advanced Volt-Var Optimization solution.

Through the adoption of DVI's EDGE® software, the Oregon electric utility is now able to target and deliver the optimal voltage range to its customers, thereby conserving electricity.

The Central Lincoln pilot program confirmed that the application of these combined technologies produced the highest levels of energy savings in its class of providers, while still ensuring reliability and maintaining customer satisfaction.

"Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) will provide better asset management of our distribution facilities and higher reliability for our customers," said Bruce Lovelin, Chief Engineer, Systems Engineering Manager. "For Central Lincoln and the electric utility industry, CVR is an operational 'game changer' that is accessible as a result of the EDGE® software, coupled with our Landis+Gyr Gridstream®  advanced metering network.

The initial CVR pilot for Central Lincoln began in the summer of 2013 and resulted in even greater-than-expected energy savings with no increase in load tap changer (LTC) movements. These savings were made possible by monitoring all the metering points throughout the AMI system and reducing the voltage with DVI's patented AMI-based approach to Volt-VAR Optimization.

"DVI looks forward to working closely with Central Lincoln and our partner, Landis+Gyr, to fully deploy EDGE® and achieve significant energy savings across their entire system," said DVI Executive Director Todd Headlee.

Unlike traditional energy efficiency or demand-response programs, EDGE® technology provides the key to effectively and effortlessly lower the energy consumption of everyone on the electric distribution grid, without requiring any change in customer behavior. Measurement and verification of the energy savings is calculated within the EDGE® software, using methodology approved by the Bonneville Power Administration.
