PITTSBURGH – Customers who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit are urged to file their taxes early. The purpose of the credit is to reduce the amount of taxes owed or to increase the amount of the refund that a taxpayer is entitled to receive.

To be eligible for this year’s Earned Income Credit, taxpayers must have had the following occur in 2001:

  • Married or single workers who lived with one child in 2001 and earned at least $1 but less than $28,281 should file form 1040 or 1040A and attach Schedule EIC.

  • Married or single workers who lived with two or more children in 2001 and earned at least $1 but less than $32,121 should file form 1040 or 1040A and attach Schedule EIC.

  • Married or single workers with no children living with you in 2001 and earned at least $1 but less than $10,710 AND were between the ages 25 and 64 should file form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ.

Taxpayers may also be eligible for the Child Tax Credit, a federal tax benefit, which is worth up to $600 for each dependent child under 17. Some families will qualify for both credits.
