Dominion East Ohio Offers Educational Grants To Schools, Educational Organizations

March 5, 2003

Dominion continues its partnership with schools and educational organizations for the 2003-04 academic year by making $200,000 available in grants for math and science projects.

The funds will be awarded to schools in Dominion's retail electric and natural gas service areas in Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The program provides grants of up to $5,000 to help schools and teachers strengthen the math and science skills of students in grades K-12.

For the first time and to emphasize the growing role of the Internet in secondary education, only on-line applications will be accepted. They can be accessed from Dominion's Internet Web site at www.dom.com, keyword "grants." The application deadline is 5 p.m., May 1.

"For seven years Dominion has shown its commitment to improving math and science skills and supporting the engineers of tomorrow through these grants," said Jay L. Johnson, president and chief executive officer, Dominion East Ohio. "We believe learning not only takes place within classroom walls, but beyond them as well. The combination provides unlimited learning opportunities."

Dominion has awarded a total of $625,000 since the program began in 1996. For example, Nolley Elementary School in Akron was awarded a $1,550 grant last year to give students an opportunity to explore the development of plant life and experience hands-on science through three seasons. Students will learn about science through the growth of the plants, as well as math, through the tracking and data collection methods used in greenhouses.

Dominion has a diversified and integrated energy portfolio consisting of about 24,000 megawatts of generation. Dominion also serves about 5 million natural gas and electric customers in nine states, including 1.2 million franchise customers at Dominion East Ohio.
