Turtle Creek Senior Recognized As Winner of Dominion's Award of Achievement

PITTSBURGH - Woodland Hills High School senior, Kevan Matthews was recently selected as one of this years winners of Dominion's annual Award of Achievement Collegiate Grant competition.

Kevan, who will attend West Virginia University in the fall of 2003, will receive a $1,000 third place grant. Dominion's Award of Achievement grant program was established in 1989 and has since awarded over $70,000 in grants to African American students in pursuit of higher education.

Some of the volunteer activities Kevan has participated include: fundraising for "Toys for Tots", serving food to the elderly at the Turtle Creek Human Resource Center and serving a pancake breakfast at the Braddock Rotary Club.

The other 2003 winners are:

  • Olivia Benson- winner of the $3,000 first place grant. Olivia is a senior at Aliquippa High School located in Aliquippa, Pa.
  • Quindelyn Cook - winner of the $2,000 second place grant. Quindelyn is a senior at Greensburg Salem High School located in Greensburg, Pa.

The winners were selected from a field of 35 applicants throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. From those, an independent review committee chose five finalists based on academic profile, letters of recommendation and a personal interview.
