Dominion To Fly Freedom Flag On September 11

September 10, 2003

RICHMOND, Va. - Dominion will fly Virginia's official symbol of remembrance for 9/11 on Thursday on both the plaza and roof of its 22-story corporate offices in downtown Richmond. Dominion was the first corporate recipient of the Freedom Flag in June during a ceremony on the State Capitol grounds.

"We are very proud to support the Freedom Flag and look forward to flying it atop our building for all in Richmond to see," said Jay L. Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Dominion Virginia Power.

"The events of that horrible day two years ago forever changed our country. We must never forget those who died, or why we should remain ever vigilant to protect our freedoms."

The Virginia Senate and House of Delegates officially designated the Freedom Flag as the Commonwealth's official symbol of remembrance during the 2003 General Assembly session.

Gov. Mark Warner issued an executive order on Feb. 24 proclaiming the Freedom Flag as Virginia's official symbol of remembrance for September 11, 2001.

Businessman Richard Melito of Richmond, the flag's designer, selected Dominion to be the first corporate recipient of Virginia's official symbol of remembrance.

"Dominion is a special corporate citizen and understands the value and importance of freedom - the privileges it affords, the responsibilities it demands, and the cost it bears," said Melito. "We look forward to Sept. 11 when the Freedom Flag will fly high over Richmond."
