RICHMOND, Va. - Dominion Virginia Power wants to shed light – at less cost to homeowners – on the topic of energy conservation by offering instant discounts for 1.4 million compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout its Virginia service area.

Working with retailer Home Depot and contractor Honeywell, Dominion will provide a $1.50 discount on single and $3 on multi-packs of Energy Star-qualified compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs purchased at Home Depot stores in Eastern, Central and Northern Virginia. Dominion plans to provide the instant discounts on a total of 1.4 million bulbs through 2009: 150,000 this year and 625,000 in each of the next two years.

“Through this program, Dominion is helping customers with a simple step toward more efficient energy practices,” said David A. Heacock, president-Dominion Virginia Power. “By replacing less efficient incandescent bulbs with CFLs, Virginians can reduce their electric consumption, lower their bills and reduce their impact on the environment.”

Compared with similar incandescent bulbs, CFLs produce the same amount of light but use about 75 percent less energy and last up to 10-times longer. The Environmental Protection Agency says that replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb with an equivalent CFL can save $54 or more in total costs during the bulb’s lifetime. The $54 is based on an average Dominion Virginia Power residential customer at today’s rates.

Based on EPA’s CFL calculator, if all 1.4 million CFL were to replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb, consumers would save through the life of the CFLs an estimated $75 million and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 425,000 tons – the equivalent of removing 70,000 cars from the road for one year.

Dominion, Honeywell and Home Depot stores in Dominion’s Virginia service area are cooperating to deliver the CFL program initiative. Home Depot was named Energy Star Partner of the Year for 2006-2007. Honeywell has one of the longest, most successful track records deploying energy efficiency programs for residential customers in North America. The company has helped more than 5 million homeowners reduce their energy consumption through its work with utilities.
