Dominion Volunteers Energized Communities Across Seven States

- Employee-nominated volunteer projects focused on environment during September and October
- 18 projects in seven states included monarch butterfly gardens, urban gardening centers, outdoor classrooms and more
- More than $40,000 and 2,000 hours of volunteer time invested

Richmond, VA – It takes a village to maintain a community, and a village of proactive volunteers is even better. Hundreds of employees dedicated more than 2,000 hours of volunteer time this fall in areas where they live and work to support Dominion’s Energizing Our Communities project blitz.

"This is a grassroots effort driven by our volunteers at locations throughout Dominion," said Hunter A. Applewhite, president of the Dominion Foundation. "The environmental organizations benefit not only from the financial support of the Dominion Foundation, but also the time and talent of our volunteers."

Each of the 18 projects selected for completion received funding from the Dominion Foundation to purchase supplies and materials, and more than 400 employees dedicated over 2,000 volunteer hours. The Dominion Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Dominion Resources, the parent company of Dominion Virginia Power, Dominion North Carolina Power, and Dominion East Ohio.

Some of the projects include:

  • In Benedict, MD, volunteers partnered with Farming 4 Hunger to restore a greenhouse and harvest fields for local distribution
  • In Halifax County, NC, new monarch butterfly gardens were built and installed
  • Volunteers partnered with the Neighborhood Resource Center in Richmond, VA, to enhance an urban garden
  • At the Donohoe Center in Greensburg, PA, volunteers worked to install erosion control measures and fortify the rain gardens
  • Volunteers built and installed outdoor classrooms at three schools in Prince William, Alexandria, and Fairfax Counties, VA
